Private visit of the Le Corbusier apartement – workshop – Paris 16

An amazing place

Located  on the top two floors of the Molitor building, it was designed and built between 1931 and 1934 by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret.
Due to its East-west orientation and its exceptional surroundings, it fits what Le Corbusier termed “the conditions of the radiant city”.
As a project for a rental building, it offered the architect the opportunity to test the validity of his urban proposals. Given that no structures were placed opposite, he could raise facades entirely filled with windows, thereby constructing the first residential apartment made of glass in architectural history. Bathed in light, Le Corbusier’s personal apartment spans the length of the last floor and, furthermore, houses his painting studio. The architect would inhabit this apartment-terrace from 1934 until his death in 1965.
The site has been registered as a UNESCO world heritage site since July 2016.

His motto: “Combine functional and audacious, useful and imaginary”.

In 2011, he acquired a large workshop in the famous area of Fb St Antoine to manufacture elegant furniture with subtle mechanisms.

Originality, refinement, and technical complexity make all his creations very attractive because they are unique pieces, limited series.

The Stern private garden in St-Cloud 92

A remarkable private garden

Directed in 1927 by JC Nicolas Forestier, curator at the time parks and walks of the city of Paris, who redeveloped, after having bought, the park Bagatelle by creating a rose garden which he will be inspired for this garden !

The daughter of the sponsor of this beautiful garden, Alice Stern, was disabled. To allow her to circulate in a wheelchair, Forestier will completely remodel the sloping garden on the hill of Saint-Cloud in a horizontal and suspended garden with a rose garden gained on the void while enjoying the magnificent view of Paris.

Most of the elements designed by Forestier remain: terrace, pavement, pergola, boxwood garden, kitchen garden as well as the relationship between the landscape, the cones of vision and the view of Paris.

Listed as an historic monument in 2006, it remains the only Forestier’s private creation still visible in the Paris region in which we wander with pleasure in the company of its charming owner.

We will share together a snack in the garden after the visit !

Auguste Perret and the Palais Iena – Paris 16

A place of culture and prestige

A magnificent building, too often unknown, which summarizes  all the architectural and technical innovations introduced by the architect Auguste Perret ..

After building a Franklin Street building in 1903, the Champs-Elysées Theater in 1913 and the Raincy Church in 1923, which gave it world renown, Auguste Perret defined a classical order at the Palais Iéna in 1939.

Proportions derive directly from the logic of the material. The slender columns carry the roof in one jet, under which a second building slides. They widen towards the summit to disappear in capitals. An implacable machine, capturing the shadow and the light on its pink marble and green porphyry concretes, the Palais Iéna is one of the most remarkable contributions of modern rationalism to universal architecture.

With the Palais Iéna, Auguste Perret has demonstrated that the combination of simple figures (rectangles, triangles, circles) could lead to elegant and innovative forms.

Wine tasting dedicated to South African wines – Paris 75016

Back from South Africa, Géraldine, our French “oenologue”, would like to share with us her favourite South African wines she just discovered

Did you know that South African wine production is by far the largest on the African continent?

The first vines date from the 17th century with the installation of Dutch colonists who transplanted in this beautiful country most of the great European grape varieties: Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Chenin …

They also made some experiments with Pinotage. Only islands of greenery, located at the foot of the mountains, the vineyards are noticeable in these desert and grandiose landscapes. South African wines are unique in style, climate and soils that are very different.

Let’s go together to discover these powerful and not without elegance wines, during this fun and festive oenological evening (course + homemade dinner).

Your friends are also welcome, in a friendly atmosphere !

Pierre Cardin : a French couturier always at the forefront- Paris 4

Let’s explore the universe and the creative sense of Pierre Cardin

Under the guidance of his ever-present assistant (who joined at the age of 14 la Maison Pierre Cardin), we will be able to admire the most emblematic models of the creative genius of this artist who did not make the unanimity with his peers but made the joy of her clients who appreciated her modernity, her sense of abstraction and her geometric lines.

The actress and model Marisa Berenson describes him as a man “enigmatic and fascinating”, “which has neither boundaries nor limits”, and “for whom the present is the future” … “A visionary”. This last characteristic being the most used to evoke its universe and its creative sense that it is in the fashion, the perfumery while passing by the jewels and the furniture.

For his part, John Galliano evokes “The creativity of Pierre Cardin who left forever a footprint on the culture of fashion by its visionary nature as its mastery of cutting and its contribution to the design of new volumes”.

A page in the history of French fashion to explore without moderation …

Visit of Maison La Roche – Paris 75016

Built between 1923 et 1925 By Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, la Maison La Roche is a very peculiar architectural project in order to gather a gallery of paintings and apartments for its owner and collector: Raoul La Roche at the bottom of a dead end in the 16th arrondissement, an underdeveloped neighborhood then.

The use of new building materials such as reinforced concrete allows Le Corbusier to implement what he will name in 1927, the “Five Points of a New Architecture” such as : free facade, free plan, long windows, roof garden, and piles.

La Roche House represents an emblematic testimony of the Modern Movement, preceding that of Villa Savoye (1928) in Poissy.

From 1925 to 1933 many architects, writers, artists, and collectors come to visit this experimental house, leaving a trace of their passage by signing the guestbook in the hall. La Maison La Roche and the adjoining Jeanneret House were classified as Historic Monuments in 1996. They were the subject of several restoration campaigns from 1970.

Hôtel de la Païva

Love, politics, sensuality and dream decorations – Paris 8

The Hotel de la Paiva is one of these elegant mansions that line the prestigious avenue des Champs Elysées.

The best artists of the mid 19th century built and decorated it for the daughter of a humble Polish Jewish tailor.

Esther Lachmann became one of the most prominent courtesans of Paris after marrying the wealthy Prussian Count Guido Henckel Von Donnersmarck. However, her dazzling social ambitions were no longer compatible with a commoner’s name! Esther therefore chose a new identity with hints of nobility… thus appeared La Paiva!

Her parties were famous and attracted the Parisian smart set. La Paiva entertained countless personalities of the Second Empire, politicians, artists, writers and entrepreneurs.

Among those were the Goncourt brothers, the writer Théophile Gauthier or Léon Gambetta who was Prime Minister from 1881 to 1882.

Géraldine, our oenologist, takes us to discover this time the Iberian peninsula where the vine is unavoidable, from the foothills of the Basque Pyrenees to the plains of Andalusia.

Those who like sweetness will rather choose the wines of Rioja, while those who prefer the robustness and the fruity will rather turn to regions like Jumillia, Ribera del Duero or Toro.

The oenology course will be followed by a Spanish dinner served at the table with all the participants, an evening that promises to be convivial and festive.

Entonces, les deceamos un BUEN VIAJE…

The exclusive visit of Louis Vuitton’s new gallery – Asnières 92

Let us return to the intimacy and history of this famous French luxury house

In 1859, with a view to expansion, Louis Vuitton moved the nerve-center of his business from Paris to Asnières.

It was a strategic choice to facilitate supply and distribution, since the new workshop was built near the River Seine and just a stone’s throw from the first ever railway line to Paris.

Constructed in the style pioneered by Eiffel, the new building also housed the Vuitton family, who lived on the top floor, in order to remain as close as possible to day-to-day operations.

Over time, as orders flowed in, the workshop continually expanded, taking on its current form towards the end of the 19th century, when it was renovated in the Art Nouveau style by artisans from the Nancy School.
Some emblematic pieces are still realized today: trunks, models in rare and exotic leathers and special orders.

This exclusive visit will allow us to enter into the intimacy of this legendary House, to highlight the link with the workshops and to better perceive the Louis Vuitton universe.

Antoine Bourdelle : his workshop, his life, his work – Paris 15

A rare testimony to the life of an artist in Montparnasse at the beginning of the 20th century !

Like Rodin, the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle wished to create his own museum. Disappeared in 1929, it left a formidable place between workshop, museum and garden just a step away from Montparnasse.

Caroline, our lecturer, will introduce us to the universe of the collaborator of Rodin, the master of Giacometti, Germaine Richier and Vieira da Silva. Bourdelle was the author of the scenery of the Champs-Elysees theater.

The contemporary extension of the museum by Christian de Portzamparc gives its dimension to the work of Antoine Bourdelle.

Visit exclusive of the Florence de Ponthaud- Neyrat sculpture workshop – Paris 7

After an academic career at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, a disciple of CÉSAR, ETIENNE-MARTIN, CARDOT and a passage in the studio of Nino BRUSCHI in Carrara, Florence de Ponthaud-Neyrat discovers the powerful art of Germaine RICHIER, her relentless quest for the balance, the strength of the carved void.

However, after meeting Robert COUTURIER, his spiritual father, the artist will change in size and material, opening a new path to his creation.

Florence de Ponthaud collects branches, bark and leaves gleaned from nature and transforms his “treasure” into a bronze bestiary, realistic, authentic and magnificent by a personal poetry.

In her workshop, exclusively focused on her creation, she twists, curves, prints the movement with wire and aluminum wire, structure and balance her studies. Feverish in the foundry, nourished by “her” artists, Florence splits, chisels his burnt woods, assembles her “treasure”, chooses such a rounded branch to form a gluteus muscle, such acorn to sculpt an eye, welds space … Weighing game, weights and counterweights. Florence plays with the shadow and the light, the voids and the full ones, the transparencies, intertwines its stranded nature until obtaining unique pieces of bronze. The metamorphosis of a nature in search of eternity.

Florence has accepted to open to us as  his studio, a real cabinet of curiosities, to tell us her work and her various sources of inspiration
